Welcome from the Principal
Welcome to the Oakbank website. I hope
that this site gives you a taste of the education we provide at
Oakbank and of a school which is that bit different for a number of
Our academic curriculum is unashamedly ambitious and we have
high expectations for all of our students in terms of commitment
and achievement in the classroom. These expectations extend beyond
the classroom too. Our extended school day means that our
curriculum also incorporates a wide range of activities for all
within the formal school day, rather than such provision only being
available to those who can stay on after school. We believe in
all-round education, not just the acquisition of academic
qualifications. Our strong House system creates a further vehicle
for a sense of belonging, pastoral care and recognition of
Oakbank is large enough to provide a comprehensive and rigorous
education, but small enough to be a genuine community. We believe
that the size of a school does matter – and that bigger does not
always mean better. At Oakbank we can genuinely know and value
students as individuals and also create a friendly, thriving and
supportive community. Students at Oakbank can continue the
friendships formed throughout their primary years as well as making
many new friends.
We also believe that education should be enjoyed rather than
endured. We want our students to be happy, because happiness and
self-confidence provide springboards for success, both at school
and in future life.
As a Free School, the school was set up by the community for the
community. We have very strong links with our local community and
we strive to instil in our students the value of service and
of caring for others.
This website can only give a brief taste of the education
we provide at Oakbank. The best way to appreciate the atmosphere of
the school is through a visit while the school is ‘in action’. In
addition to our publicised Open Days and Evenings, we welcome
group visits throughout the school year.
All of us at Oakbank look forward to meeting you and your son or
daughter and to working with you to ensure they experience success
and happiness in their secondary education.
Mr A Kilpatrick
Interim Principal, Oakbank
